hard drive crashed.sorry, lost all your data.ītw. Never have to go to a client and say.oops. Everything here is RAID 5, from Audio suite to Video edit suites. Keep making external back ups for sure but the RAID is another layer of protection. I would recommend it purely from the point of view of having some peace of mind.
You will also get slower read/write times using a software RAID solution. You will get slower read/write times using RAID 5 but for audio this is mostly a non-issue. So I pull out the dead drive, pop in a new one, tell the RAID utility to use it as a spare and off it goes and re-builds the data that was on that drive. Which was a good thing because 2 weeks later another drive failed. After initially setting it up in a RAID 0 (Striped) configuration and having a drive fail (resulting in data loss) I quickly switched it to RAID 5 (protected). I have the Apple Raid card in my mac pro.
In the PC world, you may find software based RAID-5 solutions and the key word to look for is "hardware XOR engine" which indicates that the controller board has a dedicated processor for parity calculations. In the Apple world, RAID-5 must be done through hardware. This parity calculation is data intensive and is best handled by a dedicated hardware controller, rather than leaving it to software / general purpose processing. RAID-5 writes data across all the drives simultaneously and writes parity data, so that if any one drive were to go off line, the data integrity is maintained as long as only 1 drive is lost. either a 3 drive RAID-5 + a hot spare or a 4 drive RAID-5. Since the Mac Pro has 4 slots for built in drives (not counting the optical bays), it makes sense to use them all. With RAID-5, you have to use at least 3 drives. RAID-5 is where the RAID card comes in especially handy. Either the controller is simply writing the same content to two drives, or it utilizes 2 drives as an extra wide data path as it writes. Why? Because there are not any major calculations happening to perform any of these calculations. It helps some and is a bit more reliable than software RAID, but it is correct to say that OS X can handle these duties through software.
For the most part, the RAID card will not increase the performance of RAID 0, 1, 0+1, or 1+0 arrays. There are combinations of the two, RAID 1+0 or 0+1 that require at a minimum, 4 drives to both stripe and mirror. RAID-1 is a mirror copy of 1 drive on another. RAID 0, not considered a true RAID set by some definitions increases performance, but decreases uptime.
